High-intensity wave vortices in the beamoptics domain: 3D spatial structure, singleplane models, and their propagation properties

Typically, vortices in wave fields are associated with amplitude zeros. In contrast, recently described high-intensity (Type II) wave vortices appear near amplitude poles and can exist only in disconnected space. We attempt to extend the concept of a Type II optical vortex (OV) to paraxial beam-like optical fields. It is shown that "true" Type II OV fields can exist only in a multiply connected three-dimensional space, where spatial "holes" impenetrable to the electromagnetic field are formed by purposefully created filamentary inclusions of material. However, the cross-section of a "true" Type II OV can be reproduced in a specific plane of ordinary "free" space, where the hole is designated by a region with zero amplitude. Methods for the practical creation of the discussed field structures are proposed, including methods using programmable light modulators and computer-synthesized holograms. The results of computer simulations demonstrate reasonable agreement with experimental data.
